Mertzig

Mertzig ( Luxembourgish Mäerzeg ) is a municipality in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, in the canton Diekirch. The community to which only the village Mertzig heard lies on the border between Ösling and Gutland.

Geography

Mertzig is the westernmost municipality in the canton of Diekirch. It is bordered on the north by the municipality of Esch- Sauer, in the northeast on Feulen, on the southeast by Ettelbrück and Colmar-Berg, to the south and to the west by Viichten Grosbous.

The village lies in the valley of the river Wark, which runs through the village from the southwest to the northeast. In the maps of Joseph Johann von Ferraris upper and Untermertzig are listed as separate towns. Obermertzig on the right and on the left side of the Untermertzig Wark.

History

Mertzig is first mentioned in 762 as Marciaco name. Other names are Martiaco, 842, and Mertzzich, 1476th Thus Mertzig is probably older than Feulen and one of the oldest villages of the country.

In the fire census of 1526 Mertzig is mentioned under the rule of Esch- Sauer. Overmertzich 7 mesnaiges, Niedermertzich 7 1/2 mesnaiges. Feulen has in this count 25 mesnaiges ( fireplaces ). 1611 was again counted in the well names are mentioned.
