Messery

Messery is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

Messery is located on 428 m above sea level. M., 20 km north -east of Geneva (air line). The village is located on a hill on the south bank of Lake Geneva, approximately opposite the Swiss town of Nyon, on the west side of Presqu'ile du Léman, a broad peninsula, which juts far into the lake.

The area of ​​9:22 km ² municipal area includes a section on the south bank of Lake Geneva, the lake shore line is approximately 3.25 km. The municipal area extends from the shallow lake shore southeastward over a gently rising slope up to the plateau of the Presqu'ile du Léman. To Messery the hamlet settlement Essert ( 447 m above sea level. M. ) is a scenic location on the edge of the plateau of the Peninsula. Neighboring communities of Messery are Chens- sur -Léman and Massongy in the south, and Excenevex Yvoire in the east and in the north Nernier.

History

The area around Messery was inhabited very early. The oldest traces derived from two riparian settlements from the Neolithic period. Even during the Roman era there was a settlement here.

Today's toponym is derived from the Gallo-Roman personal name Masirius and means something like estate of Masirius. In the Middle Ages Messery was in an area that was disputed between the Counts of Faucigny, the Counts of Geneva and the Dukes of Savoy.

With 2119 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Messery belongs to the medium-sized towns in the Haute-Savoie region. In recent decades, a very strong growth of population was recorded. Outside the village near the lake shore there are many second homes.

Economy and infrastructure

Messery was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by farming village. Today there are numerous workers who engage in the surrounding larger towns of their work and commute in part to Geneva.

The town has a small harbor. Publicly accessible is the lakefront in the places La Pointe and Sous les Prés with beaches and picnic areas. Messery is off the major thoroughfares, yet is within easy reach of Douvaine from. Further connections are with Yvoire and Hermance.
