Messier 84

Messier 84 (also known as NGC 4374 ) is a 9.2 like bright galaxy with a surface area of 6 ' 0 x 5 ', 4 in the constellation Virgo.

M84 is located in the center of the Virgo cluster of galaxies in the vicinity of the giant galaxy M87 and is about 60 million light- years away. Previously, her type was specified in the Hubble sequence with E1 ( flattened elliptical). But modern writers tend to go on the assumption that it is a lenticular galaxy of type S0, which we practically look frontal.

M84 marks the beginning of the so-called Markarjan'schen chain, a group of galaxies in an area of about 1.5 degrees in diameter.

Messier 84 was discovered on 18 March 1781 by the French astronomer Charles Messier.
