Met Office

The Met Office is the national meteorological service of the United Kingdom. The name Met Office was originally an abbreviation for Meteorological Office, however, is now the official name.

The service in 1854, was founded by Robert FitzRoy as a small department within the Board of Trade, which published mainly storm warnings to mariners. After the Met Office from 1990 was initially part of the Defense Ministry, it has been subject since 2011 the Ministry of Economy. Today, it is obliged to act according to business principles.

The headquarters is located in Exeter, Devon, where there is also a private research center with the Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research. The Met Office also has a weather forecast center in Aberdeen as well as offices in Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands. A little-known department is the Mobile Met Office supplied the troops during conflicts with weather data, particularly the Royal Air Force. This department moved its headquarters in 2003 to Bracknell in Berkshire.

One of the most famous services of the Met Office is the marine weather forecast ( Shipping Forecast ), which will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4.

The Met Office is that of the International Civil Aviation Organization authorized Volcanic Ash Advisory Center for flight information regions Bodø Oceanic, Reykjavik, Shanwick Oceanic, London, Scottish and Shannon.
