Metal for the Brain

Metal for the Brain was a metal festival in Canberra (Australia).

Background

In 1990, the Australian teenager Alec Hurley was beaten up outside a nightclub in Canberra when he was trying to settle a dispute. He was so serious head injuries that he was nursing care. Then resolved Joel Green of Armoured Angel to organize a benefit concert to raise money for medical care and the care of Hurley. On November 16, 1991, the first Metal for the Brain was held on the grounds of the Australian National University.

History

At the first festival in 1991 only occurred six metal bands. In 1996 Armoured Angel disbanded and the Australians Alchemist took over the organization. Due to the increased interest in the concert had to be moved to a bigger place, who was discovered in the district of Belconnen in the cafeteria of the University of Canberra from 2000. The 2000 festival was also the first in which occurred with the Canadians Voivod a band headlining that did not come from Australia.

In 2002, the festival had to be canceled because of difficulties with the participating insurance companies. The 2004 Festival has been postponed to early 2005 due to a tour of the organizers Alchemist, at the same time found two smaller offshoot of the festival in Perth and Brisbane instead. On the eve of Metal for the Brain 2005, the first time were the Australian Heavy Metal Music Awards at the initiative of the Australian edition of Kerrang! awarded. The aligned on 4 November 2006 festival was with 40 bands on three stages and a total duration of 14 hours, the largest and last. Adam Agius, lead singer of Alchemist and festival organizer gave as the main reason for the sharp increase in costs of the event, Agius spoke of last around 100,000 AUD, from which mustered Alchemist approximately 70% of band means.

It appeared a total of two festival - sampler, a 2001 Chatterbox Records and a 2005 Faultline. The Metal for the Brain is the biggest Australian metal festival of the 1990s and 2000s, with up to 2,000 visitors.
