Metatron

Metatron is a high ranking angel in Jewish mythology. Today, he is especially revered in Western esotericism. Metatron's functions in the various religions are not uniform and therefore not clearly determined.

Tradition

Metatron is mentioned in three places in the Babylonian Talmud.

The Zohar refers to Metatron as those angel that led the people of Israel during the Exodus from Egypt through the wilderness. He communicated the will of the Creator to prophets and other angels and demons, including the Angel Gabriel and Samael.

Certain religious schools regard him as the objection raised by God to the status of seraphim Enoch. He became the highest-ranking member of the heavenly hierarchy according to the creators, the " governor of Heaven" and " King of Angels ". He is considered the angel of the beginning and the end.

Popular receptions

  • The fantasy novel Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman mentions Metatron as the voice of the Lord, and compares these items in a footnote with an earthly Spokesperson same.
  • In the book series His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman, he has assumed the functions of God, who has grown old and senile. At the end of the book he is destroyed in a battle with two human protagonists.
  • In the movie Dogma 1999 Metatron is played by Alan Rickman. He says anyone who has ever claimed to have spoken with God, had in fact heard Metatron as the "voice of God", because no human being could withstand the voice of God.
  • In the series Supernatural Metatron is the " writer " of God. And thus written everything handed down by God.
  • The manga and anime series Angel Sanctuary makes reference to Metatron as the "voice of God". He is a small child under the tutelage of Great Minister Sevothtarte.
  • The American band practice took in 1994 an album named Metatron on.
  • The American band The Mars Volta has released on her the 2008 album The Bedlam in Goliath is a song called Metatron.
  • The jazz trio The Bad Plus released in 2010 the song My Friend Metatron on their album Never Stop.
  • The Finnish band Babylon Whores published in 1997 the song on their album Metatron Cold Heaven.
