Metin Göktepe

Metin Göktepe ( born April 10, 1969 in Gürün; † January 8, 1996 ) was a Turkish journalist. He first worked for the magazine Gerçek, later for the newspaper Evrensel.

As Göktepe on 8 January 1996 at Istanbul's Eyüp a funeral of two wanted to report in detention prisoner killed, he was arrested along with about 1,000 other people in a mass arrest. After his arrest, he was beaten by several police officers. Him medical help was refused then, and he died on the same day from his injuries.

The autopsy results, "that death is due to subdural and arachnoid brain hemorrhage and bleeding in the tissues, caused by a severe head trauma occurred ." Moreover, the body of the corpse as "very many severe traumatic lesions and a broken rib " on.

The case attracted in Turkey and abroad stir. Beginning of 1998, were sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for manslaughter, five of eleven accused policemen. The judgment has been criticized by human rights organizations as being too lenient.
