Metković

Metković [' mɛtkovitɕ ] is a town in the Dubrovnik-Neretva county in southern Croatia. The population of the town was 2011 15.329 inhabitants. The entire municipality has 16,788 inhabitants.

Metković situated on the river Neretva, which from here on branches to a fertile river delta, before the main river empties into the Adriatic Sea at Ploce.

In the last 25 km of the Neretva river is navigable for small vessels since the regulation in 1895.

The delta of the Neretva plays an important role for agriculture in the southern part of the country, as it is one of the few irrigated and very fertile plains of the region. Since 1881 and to a greater extent after 1945, large parts of the marsh were drained and thus made ​​usable for agriculture.

Near the town are the ruins of the ancient city Narona whose former meaning was dependent on the location on the river and near the sea.

North of the city is a major border crossing to Bosnia and Herzegovina, both road and rail side has meaning in the course of the Pan-European Corridor Vc and connects Mostar with the seaport in Ploce.
