Metol, according to IUPAC 4 - phenol sulfate ( methylamino) or also called Temal or photo -Rex, is a deleterious salt of Methylaminophenols. It has on the benzene ring, counted from the phenolic hydroxyl group into the so-called para- or 4- position, a simple methylated, protonated amino group. The counter-ion acts a sulfate ion. Here, due to the stoichiometric ratio per sulfate anion two 4 - (methylamino ) phenol cations present.
Use
Metol is used in the black and white photography as a developer for black and white films and B / W photo paper in combination with other developing substances such as hydroquinone, catechol or phenidone. A standard formulation with Metol and hydroquinone is the film developer Ilford ID - 11 or Kodak D-76, which makes you look here the effect of the super addition of the two developers to use.
Safety
Metol irritates the eyes, skin and respiratory tract. It is a health hazard and a sensitizing on contact with skin and if swallowed. Metol is extremely hazardous and therefore classified as dangerous for the environment.
