Metroon
A Metroon (plural Metroa, from Greek μήτηρ θεῶν " mother of the gods " ) is in the ancient world generally a sanctuary of Cybele or occasionally identified with their goddesses Rhea, or Demeter, or Magna Mater, her Roman counterpart.
Specifically, two temples are called Metroon, namely:
- In ancient Athens, the sanctuary of Cybele on the west side of the Agora of Athens, which served as the State Archives at the same time, see Metroon (Athens)
- A Doric temple in Olympia in front of Treasure House Terrace, which was rebuilt under Augustus for the imperial cult, see Metroon ( Olympia)
- Temple of Cybele
