Metrophanes of Byzantium

Metrophanes of Constantinople Opel († 326 ) was the first historically documented Bishop of Constantinople Opel.

His father Dometius, a brother of the Roman Emperor Probus, converted to Christianity and traveled due to persecution of Christians with two sons, Probus and Metrophanes, from Rome to Byzantium. There, the three have been informed by the then Bishop Titus and ordained priests. After the death of Titus only Dometius ( 272-303 ) and then his sons Probus ( 303-315 ) and Methrophanes ( 316-324 ) was his become bishop of Byzantium.

At the First Council of Nicaea Metrophanes could not attend due to his advanced age. In his place was his deputy and later successor Alexander of Constantinople Opel.

Metrophanes died 326 His feast day is June 4.
