Metrorrhagia

Metrorrhagia is the medical term for acyclic bleeding from the uterus outside the normal menstrual cycle. It is here spoken of metrorrhagia. Keep this bleeding for longer than 14 days, there is a so-called menometrorrhagia. They often occur in adolescence and during the perimenopause.

The causes of metrorrhagia can be:

  • Hormonal dysfunction (among adolescence and menopause )
  • Fibroids
  • Endometrial cancer
  • Extra-uterine pregnancy
  • Polyposis
  • Spotting while taking the contraceptive pill
  • Intrauterine
  • Wounded vessel ( eg, iatrogenic)
  • Spotting after menopause

Especially for women who are older than 40 years and where a metrorrhagia or menometrorrhagia occur, must always be thought of the possibility of the presence of endometrial cancer. For them, a gynecological investigation with a removal of endometrium from the uterine cavity and examination of this tissue should be done under the microscope after repeated occurrence of metrorrhagia or a menometrorrhagia.
