Mettmach

Mettmach is a market town in Upper Austria in the district of Ried in the Innviertel with 2423 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013). The municipality is located in the judicial district of Ried.

Geography

Mettmach is located on 464 m height at the edge of the Kobernaußer forest. The extension is from north to south 10.8 kilometers, from west to east 5.9 km. The total area is 29.5 km ². 23.7 % of the area is forested, 67.5 % of the area is used for agriculture.

History

The first mention of Mettmach is found in a deed of gift of Emperor Conrad II Count to a Pilgrim in Mattiggau, then the noble seats hub, Neundling, Weiffendorf, Mairing and Katzenberg have been mentioned in the local area. 1150 appeared the name of a certain " Chuno de Metemenha " on a first indication of the current name of the place. In the 12th century, a tavern was built in the place which the place probably does not feature as a simple village, but as Hofmark.

Since the establishment of the Duchy of Bavaria Mettmach was Bavarian until 1779 and came to the Peace of Teschen with the Innviertel (then ' Innbaiern ') to Austria. During the Napoleonic Wars shortly Bavarian, Mettmach heard since 1814 finally returned to Austria above the Enns. 1849 Mettmach becomes a political community, which is justified from the control communities Mettmach, stroke, and Neundling Weiffendorf, 1876 is the community to its own parish.

Passion Play Mettmach

Known the place is nationally primarily through the Passion Play Mettmach - the only Passion Play in Upper Austria. This theater community was founded in 1947 by the returning soldiers Georg Vorhauer, Serious Stranzinger and Joseph Hager. At the beginning they played several pieces, among others Anyone farmers and Franzl. 1950 were listed on the advice of the local priest, the first Passion Play in Mettmach.
