Mettnau

The Mettnau is a peninsula and is located east of the city of Radolfzell in the western part of Lake Constance. It lies between the Markelfinger angle to the north and Lake Zell in the south and has a length of 3.5 kilometers and a width of up to 800 meters, a size of 180 hectares.

A large part of the peninsula is a nature reserve. The NSG Mettnau, which also includes the small southern offshore island of love, is being supervised by the Wildlife Protection Society Germany (NABU ) on behalf of the Regional Council of Freiburg.

The NSG Mettnau is accessed through the Floerickweg - named after the scientist Kurt Floericke - and the Mettnau Tower.

Nature reserve

The nature reserve was Mettnau 1926 provided by the City Radolfzell under protection, but only in 1984 expanded to its current size of 140 acres. By incidental filling works at the pond, the peninsula has become the most important regional breeding area for waterfowl. The pond is independent of the fluctuations in water of Lake Constance, which gives them a secure nesting site primarily for duck species. In addition, it is close enough to the nutrient-rich shallow water zones of Markelfinger angle that provide sufficient food for the offspring.

The outermost tip of the peninsula, also called Mettnauspitze is locked in time April 15 to August 31 from NABU Nature Centre Mettnau for hikers and walkers by closing the gate from the Mettnau tower to trouble-free breeding and rearing young of there rare birds living to ensure.

Development

On the front half of the peninsula lies the health resort. In addition to the resident Werner Messmer Clinic are here building the Mettnau cure, one of the most important and traditional centers for exercise therapy in Germany, as well as the bushel castle, the former villa of the poet Joseph Victor von Scheffel. This is now the seat of the spa. In addition to the beach and the beach café Mettnau is a Schiffsanlager, which is served by the Bodensee companies. On the rear peninsula there is a field station of Radolfzell ornithological and Mettnau Tower ( until a few years ago Ludwig Finckh tower called ). On the very tip of the peninsula, there is also not open to the public Viktor von Scheffel Memorial, a small monument.
