Metynnis

Metynnis argenteus

Metynnis is a genus relatively deep-bodied, disc-like tetras. The German name Scheibensalmler accesses this characteristic body shape. The genus is widespread in South America from the Orinoco to the Rio de la Plata. The genus is absent in the catchment area of the Rio Magdalena and in eastern Brazil, south of the Rio Sao Fancisco. These are mainly herbivorous freshwater fish diet.

Features

The physique of all Metynnis species is characterized by Hochrückigkeit and a laterally strongly compressed form. Fishes of the genus Metynnis reach a size of 12 cm to 16 cm standard length. Genus characterized by the long, relatively flat dorsal fin, which allows for easy differentiation from the genera Myleus and Myloplus. Furthermore, the genus is characterized by the presence of a Prädorsalstachels, which is not visible in the living animal, however. Furthermore, in Metynnis species typical of the subfamily of Sägesalmler Abdominalzähne are arranged in front of the ventral fins ( pectoral).

The basic color of the Metynnis species is silvery. In various types of strip drawings (eg Metynnis hypsauchen ) or dark spots occur ( Metynnis lippincottianus, Metynnis maculatus ). Chance also characteristic colored Humeralflecke are encountered ( Metynnis mola ). The intensity of this color pattern is depending on mood sometimes. Gender discrimination may be based on the anal fin. Males have front -lobed or more elongated anal fins, in females these, however, are rather straight.

Hunting and

Metynnis species are facing swimmers who should be kept in groups of 6 or more animals. The aquarium hobby is the most famous Scheibensalmler Dickkopfscheibensalmler ( Metynnis altidorsalis; hypsauchen in older literature Metynnis schreitmuelleri or Metynnis ). Since they are herbivores, may be waived by a planting of the aquarium; However, individual plant species remain unmolested under circumstances of the animals. Successful offspring are occupied for Metynnis altidorsalis and Metynnis maculatus.
