Meuse

The Meuse [Mo ː z] is a French department of atomic number 55, it is located in the Lorraine region and is after the river Maas ( Meuse French ) named. Its prefecture is Bar-le- Duc, sub-prefectures are COMMERCY and Verdun.

Geography

The department is bordered to the north by the Belgian province of Luxembourg, on the east by the department of Meurthe -et -Moselle, on the south by the departments of Vosges and Haute -Marne, and on the west by the departments of Marne and the Ardennes.

The main cities are Verdun, Bar -le- Duc, COMMERCY, Saint- Mihiel, Ligny -en- Barrois, Étain, Montmédy and Stenay.

The rivers in the department of Meuse Meuse include, Aire, Chiers, Ornain Saulx, Orge, Oignon, Vaise, Orne.

History

The Meuse is one of the 83 départements, which were founded on March 4, 1790. It belonged to the province of Lorraine and was in the eight districts of Bar-le- Duc, Clermont -en- Argonne, COMMERCY, Étain, Gondrecourt -le- Château, Saint- Mihiel, Verdun Stenay and organized. In 1800, the arrondissements Bar-le- Duc, COMMERCY, Montmédy and Verdun were formed. The district Montmédy in 1926 disbanded.

Since its inception, its boundaries have changed little. In 1997, the village of Han -devant- Pierrepont was carved out of the Meuse and the département of Meurthe -et -Moselle slammed.

Across the Meuse was the front line during the First World War. Focus was mainly fought over the space of Verdun in 1916.
