Mexican general election, 2012

In the presidential elections in Mexico in 2012 July 1, 2012 were Enrique Peña Nieto (PRI ), Josefina Vázquez Mota ( PAN), Andrés Manuel López Obrador ( PRD) and Gabriel Quadri de la Torre (Nueva Alianza, PANAL ) against each other. Elected for a single term of office from 2012 to 2018 was the candidate with the most votes. A second ballot was not provided.

After the preliminary results Enrique Peña Nieto won the election with 38.15 percent of the vote. López Obrador, took the second place, then brought an action before the national electoral authority IFE, as there had been several constitutional breakthroughs in the election and the opposition votes shopped in a big way. The Election Commission announced, announced on 4 July 2012, to allow the new ballots counted out of 54.5 percent of the ballot boxes. However, the recount did not change the result and for Peña Nieto remained almost seven percentage points ahead of López Obrador. Favorite to succeed Felipe Calderón, Enrique Peña Nieto (PRI ). According to various opinion polls in the spring of 2012, he could count on an average 47% of all votes. Josefina Vazquez Mota ( PAN) came up with a share of 27 % and Andrés Manuel López Obrador ( PRD) to 24%. Beaten with 2% share of the vote was Gabriel Quadri de la Torre ( PANAL ) in the last position.

Main issues in the election campaign were the weak economy and the acute crisis of internal security, in particular the fight against organized crime ( drug war in Mexico), which had led to a deterioration in the quality of life.

Officially, the campaign began on March 30, 2012. A first televised debate with the presidential candidates was held on 6 May 2012. From mid-May 2012 There were demonstrations by students from private and public universities. They threw newspapers and TV channels before (especially Televisa and TV Azteca ), to favor the candidate Enrique Pena Nieto and the PRI in their coverage of the upcoming presidential election.
