Mexican shrew

The Mexican desert shrew ( Megasorex gigas) is an endemic species of mammal in Mexico from the family of shrews ( Soricidae ).

Features

The fur of these shrews is dark brown or gray-brown on the top, the underside is lighter. The skull is relatively large and round. These animals can reach a body length 83-90 mm ​​, which must be added a 39 to 50 millimeters long tail comes. The weight is 9.5 to 12 grams.

Dissemination and lifestyle

The distribution area of the Mexican desert shrews located in the southwestern Mexico and includes the states of Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacan, Guerrero and Oaxaca. Despite its name, this is not only in deserts, but also inhabits forests and other habitats, preferably near rivers and comes in altitudes up to 1700 meters in front. Otherwise, little is known about their way of life.

The Mexican desert shrew is likely to be closely related to the horror desert shrews and is sometimes placed in the same genus, Notiosorex, but usually managed as a separate genus.
