Mexican volcano mouse

The Mexican volcano mouse ( Neotomodon alstoni ) is a living in Mexico rodent species from the group of the New world.

These rodents reach a body length of 10 to 13 centimeters and a tail length of 8 to 11 inches. Its weight is usually 40 to 60 grams. Their soft, dense fur is at the top of gray-brown, sometimes reddish, and white on the bottom. The hairy tail is bi-colored, brownish above and white below. The large ears are almost hairless.

Mexican volcano mice inhabit the volcanic region of central Mexico. Their range extends from Michoacan to Veracruz. Their habitat is forests in 2600-4300 meters altitude. They are nocturnal, during the day they retire to burrows that they have dug themselves or taken over by pocket gophers.

Twice or more in the female gives birth after a roughly 27 - day gestation, two to five pups.

Systematically was the Mexican volcano mouse, due to the similar construction of the incisors long time as relatives of the American bush rat ( Neotoma ). Today, however, it is found rather in the vicinity of the Weißfußmäuse ( Peromyscus ).
