Mežaparks

Mežaparks ( German: Kaiser Forest) is a district of the Latvian capital Riga.

It is located in the northeast of the city area in the district Ziemeļu rajons on the left bank of the lake Ķīšezers. The neighboring districts are Čiekurkalns, Brasa, Sarkandaugava and Milgravis. At 11.821 km ² live 4,413 inhabitants (2008 ). Translated literally means Mežaparks, Forest Park '.

The Park and designed as a garden city suburb were created in the early 20th century for the German elite of Riga, the German name was Kaiserwald. During the Second World War, was erected by the Nazis in concentration camps Kaiserwald in this district.

Since the establishment of the district is there the Riga Zoo ( Rigas Zooloģiskais dārzs ) it came up a theme park. There is an open air stage on which hosts the Latvian Song Festivals. Thus, this was an important place of Singing Revolution.

The football team of SV Kaiserwald Riga was one of the leading teams in the 1910s and 1920s and was twice Latvian champion.
