Michael Angelo Saltarelli

Michael Angelo Saltarelli ( born January 17, 1933, Jersey City, New Jersey, United States; † October 8, 2009 ) was Roman Catholic bishop of Wilmington.

Life

Michael Angelo Saltarelli, one of seven children of an Italian immigrant family, graduated in 1956 with a Bachelor of Arts from the Roman Catholic Seton Hall University. He then studied Catholic theology at Immaculate Conception Seminary in Darlington and received on May 28, 1960 in the Basilica of Newark ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Newark by Archbishop Thomas Aloysius Boland. He was from 1960 to 1977 in the care of souls in Nutley worked and studied at the Manhattan College religious studies. From 1977 to 1982 he was pastor in Bayonne. Archbishop Peter Leo Gerety appointed him in 1982 to become Director of Pastoral Services in the Archdiocese of Newark. 1984 John Paul II named him an honorary prelate with the title of Monsignor. In 1985 he became pastor in Cedar Grove. In 1987 he was appointed by Archbishop Theodore E. McCarrick vicar for priests of the Archdiocese of Newark, and later he was chairman of the priesthood in the Archdiocese and Chairman of the Diocesan Board and the Diocesan school supervision and dean of North Essex and Bayonne.

Pope John Paul II appointed him in 1990 as Titular Bishop of Mesarfelta and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Newark. Theodore Edgar McCarrick, Archbishop of Newark and later cardinal, gave him on 30 July 1990, the episcopal ordination; Archbishop Peter Leo Gerety were co-consecrators and Bishop John Mortimer Smith. He was also rector of the Cathedral in Newark and in other diocesan offices operate. For the Knights of Columbus in New Jersey, he became involved as a chaplain.

On November 21, 1995, he was appointed by Pope John Paul II for the eighth bishop of Wilmington. The inauguration followed on 23 January of the following year. 2008 was his age-related resignation by Pope Benedict XVI. granted.
