Michael Hofmann

Michael Hofmann ( born 1957 in Freiburg) is an English poet, translator and literary critic.

Life

The son of the writer Gert Hofmann has been living in England in 1961 and attended Winchester College. After studying English and Comparative Literature at Oxford (1979) and a Masters in Cambridge (1984 ), he held several teaching positions at universities, including the University of Michigan. He became a distinguished lecturer at the English department of the University of Florida ordered in 1993. In 2008, Hofmann had an invitation as a Poet- in-Residence to Queensland in Australia.

He is married to the writer Lavinia Greenlaw. He has also translated some of his father's works into English.

The translation of Hans Fallada, Every Man Dies Alone, had in 2010 was such a great sales success in the U.S. and in the UK, that in Germany a new critical edition of Everyone dies alone.

Awards

  • Cholmondeley Award in 1984 for his poetry collection Night in the Iron Hotel
  • Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize in 1988 for his book of poems Acrimony
  • Schlegel-Tieck Prize of the German Embassy in London in 1988, for the translation of Patrick Süskind's The Double -Bass (the bass) and again in 1993 for the translation of Wolfgang Koeppen's Death in Rome ( Death in Rome)
  • Helen and Kurt Wolff Translator's Prize 2000 for the translation of Joseph Roth's novella Rebellion ( the rebellion ) to a one-year scholarship at the Literary Colloquium Berlin
  • DeKa -bank price of the Literature House, Frankfurt 2004
  • Oxford - Weidenfeld Translation Prize in 2004 for the translation of Ernst Jünger 's Storm of Steel ( Storm of Steel )
  • Spycher: Literature Prize in 2002 together with Lavinia Greenlaw Leuk
