Michael Lau

Michael Lau (born 1970 in Hong Kong ) is an artist from Hong Kong, who is considered the inventor of the genre Urban Vinyl. His work was the mid-1990s the first who brought the format Action Figure artistically in a new direction.

Biography

After completing his studies in 1992 Lau began with comics and the creation of characters and had noted successes in galleries. In 1994, he developed the " Anodize " album, the figure " The Gardener " and put a photo on the cover. " The Gardener " is considered the first designer toy.

Together with Eric So Lau was invited to ToYcon 1996, a trade fair for collectors of classic Japanese action figures, which aroused much interest for this new form of character design. The breakthrough was finally issuing the original 101 " The Gardener " figures in the Hong Kong Art Center.

Michael Laus figures are heavily influenced by American and Asian hip hop and skateboard culture.

Further work by Lau are Crazy Children Series, Lamdog Series, Crazy Miles Co. as well as many individual works. Commercial success had Lau by various works for Sony and Nike, his figures were also used in some commercials.

Opened in 2004, Lau his own gallery "michael" in Hong Kong.
