Michael Lynagh

Michael Lynagh ( born October 25, 1963 in Brisbane ) is an Australian former rugby union player, who was employed on the position of the connector. Together with David Campese and Nick Farr -Jones, he formed the so-called "Holy Trinity " in the Australian national team. In 72 international matches, he scored 911 points and was at his time the most successful collector points until it overtook Neil Jenkins 1999.

Career

Lynagh celebrated in 1984 with 20 years his debut for Australia in the match against Fiji. He showed his strength in the kicking game and scored nine points through penalty kicks. In the autumn of the national team traveled to the British Isles to play there, among other things against England and Wales. Lynagh was used during this tour as an internal three-quarter and scored two tries. With the retirement of Mark Ella in the following year he moved to the connector position on which he played for the next ten years for the " Wallabies ".

Prior to the first World Cup, which was held by New Zealand and Australia, the Australians defeated the All Blacks in the Bledisloe Cup duel for and counted therefore the biggest favorites for the world title. The team ultimately failed to France and lost in the match for third place against Wales. Lynagh contributed during the tournament with 82 points. Only the New Zealander Grant Fox get more points.

1989 visited the British and Irish Lions Australia to three official test matches against the Australian team to contest from which they ultimately won two. Lynagh was one of the strongest players of the defeated " Wallabies ", but could not prevent the victory of the Lions. He scored 24 points in 1990 against France, and thus took over the Australian record for most points in a game. In the same year he surpassed the 500 - point mark for the first player in history. At the World Championships 1991 he was part of the national team that won the first world title for Australia. He scoring with 66 points, the second highest of all players. In the quarter- final against Ireland he showed his important role in the team when he took over the role after the injury of captain Farr -Jones and with a jump kick and an attempt the game in favor of the " Wallabies " turned.

1993 Lynagh was the captaincy ultimately is all about giving. He was injured this year but heavy, so he could not fill his new role often. The last major tournament of his career was the 1995 World Cup, failed in Australia in the quarter finals to England. Lynagh was with 47 points in three games again to the Topscorern the tournament. With the departure at the World Cup, he finished his international career and moved to English club Saracens to play there for two years running.
