Michael Myers (politician)

Joseph Michael " Ozzie " Myers ( born May 4, 1943 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American politician of the Democratic Party and a former deputy in the U.S. House of Representatives for the state of Pennsylvania, which was excluded from the 1980 Congress.

Biography

After the visit of Bishop Neuman High School and graduated from the Philadelphia Public School in 1961, he worked as a docker. His political career began in 1970 with the election to the House of Representatives of Pennsylvania, where he remained until 1976.

After the death of William A. Barrett, he was elected in a by-election as his successor in the House of Representatives of the United States and this was one of 2 November 1976 to 2 October 1980. As part of the operation of the FBI Abscam investigation was opened against him 1979-1980. Originally the operation was directed against the trade in stolen goods; the FBI it changed but soon into an investigation of public corruption.

The investigation led to the conviction of a U.S. Senator, five members of the U.S. House of Representatives, the Mayor of Camden (New Jersey), members of the City Council of Philadelphia and an official of the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Of the 31 politicians who aim of the investigation were convicted different dishes next to Myers 1981 Senator Harrison A. Williams (D -NJ ), Congressman John Jenrette, the (D -SC ), Richard Kelly ( R -FL), Raymond F. Lederer ( D -PA) and Frank Thompson (D -NJ ) and the Mayor of Camden, Angelo Errichetti.

While most politicians resigned voluntarily, the House of Representatives Myers had to exclude formally. This was done by a decision of the House of Representatives on 2 October 1980 ( House Resolution 794 ). Myers was the first congressman since 1861, which was formally excluded from the House of Representatives. Myers himself was sentenced in 1981 to three years' imprisonment.

In May 1988, he ran unsuccessfully as a ruler of the 39th district ( 39th Ward) Philadelphia.
