Michael Renkel

Michael Renkel (* 1965 in Celle ) is a German guitarist and composer, who has become known as improvisation musicians.

Life and work

Michael Renkel began with 8 years of playing classical guitar ( teaching ); he studied from 1990-1994 at the Hamburg Conservatory classical guitar, developed since the late 1980s, his own style, which includes the preparation of the instrument and advanced playing techniques.

He deals with aleatoric composition, variable shape, structure and notation. Influences are, inter alia, John Cage, Morton Feldman, Hans Werner Henze, Helmut Lachenmann, Violeta Dinescu, Derek Bailey, but also old lute music. He is the first musician who alienated the classical guitar through computer patches in live processing method.

Since 1994, numerous compositions were created including Alba for 8 solo instruments, Errorkoerper for electric guitar, various pieces for classical guitar. His compositions are published by Verlag Neue Musik.

Renkel works as an instrumentalist exclusively in solid projects that a group aesthetics and language develop over long periods, including since 1989 the duo Activity Center with Burkhard Beins, the acoustic / electronic trio phono_phono, the ensemble phosphorus, among others with Axel Dörner, Ignaz Schick, Robin Hayward, Annette Krebs, Andrea Neumann, Berlin Electric Guitar Jörg Maria Zeger Unit with Tobias and Vethake, and in a duo with Sven -Åke Johansson. He appears throughout Europe several tours and festivals such as musique action, nous sons and LEM Festival / Spain, Expozice Nové hudby or International Art Biennale in Wroclaw. Since the late 1990 years Renkel also deals with electric guitar and live electronics and field recordings. Since 2006 he has developed sound installations.
