Michael Riffaterre

Michael Riffaterre ( born November 20, 1924 in Bourganeuf, † May 27, 2006 in New York) was an American linguist and literary scholar of French origin.

Life and work

Michel Riffaterre was the son of the parliamentarian Riffaterre Camille ( 1879-1964 ). He studied in Lyon and at the Sorbonne, went to the United States in 1950 and received his PhD in 1955 at Columbia University, New York, via Le style of the Pleiades de Gobineau. Essai d'application d'une méthode stylistique ( Geneva / Paris / New York 1957). Ibid he was Instructor (1953), Assistant Professor (1955), Full Professor (1964 ), Blanche W. knob Professor (1975) and 1982-2004 University Professor. From 1971 to 2000 he was editor of the magazine Romanic Review. Riffaterre honorary degrees from the universities of Clermont -Ferrand and Paris.
