The Michigan Technological University (abbr.: Michigan Tech or MTU) main campus is located in Houghton, Michigan on the Upper Peninsula.

History

Michigan Tech was founded in 1885 as the Michigan Mining School. The state of Michigan established the University of Mining Engineers of the local copper mining industry to incorporate. At the beginning the University had four professors and 23 students, and the lectures were held on the first floor of the Houghton Fire Hall. The name of the university has changed since then three times: first at Michigan College of Mines, then to Michigan College of Mining and Technology, and finally to Michigan Technological University on the basis of advanced study programs. Although today is more than 50% the number of students from engineering, there are more than 120 degree programs.

Michigan Tech is known for degree programs in engineering, science, computer science, business administration, engineering, environmental science, and technical communication. The University is divided into different sections:

Environment Keweenaw

About the " Portage Lake " is an office building from Michigan Tech. Also nearby is the " Keweenaw Research Center." The University also has a downhill ski ( Mont Ripley ) and a golf course ( Portage Lake Golf Course ).

Ford Forestry Center

1840 hectares of forest south of Houghton in Alberta belong to the Ford Forestry Center, a center for forestry and environmental research. There are also apartments, so forestry and environmental science students can study for a semester in nature.
