Michio Jimbo

Michio Jimbo (Jap.神 保 道夫, Michio Jimbo, * 1951) is a Japanese mathematician who deals with mathematical physics.

Jimbo studied at the University of Tokyo ( completion 1974) and Mikio Satō at RIMS ( Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences) in Kyoto. He became a professor at Kyoto University in 1992 and 2000 at his alma mater.

Jimbo deals with integrable models of statistical mechanics and quantum field theory and there emerging algebraic structures such as quantum groups ( in connection with the Yang -Baxter equation), which he discovered independently by Vladimir Drinfeld and affine Lie algebras (for example, in Solitongleichungen, the due to an infinite number of conserved quantities are solved exactly, in collaboration with Etsuro Date, Tetsuji Miwa and Masaki Kashiwara ). With Miwa and others, he also examined the role of quantum groups in detachable lattice models and found exact formulas for the correlation functions. With Hitoshi Konno, Satoru Odake and Jun'ichi Shiraishi he examined elliptic quantum groups.

With his teacher Mikio Satō and Tetsuji Miwa he discovered in the 1970s, a connection with monodromy preserving deformations of linear differential equations and correlation functions in the Ising model. With Miwa he examined then generally isomonodrome deformations of linear differential equations ( at the beginning of the 20th century by Ludwig Schlesinger started ).

He also looked exactly soluble spin chains and the algebraic structures involved.

In 1987 he received together with Tetsuji Miwa autumn price of the Japanese Mathematical Society in 1993 and the Prize of the Japan Academy of Sciences. In 1990 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Kyoto ( Solvable lattice models and quantum groups). For 2013, the program of the Dannie Heineman Prize for Mathematical Physics was awarded jointly with Miwa. Their fundamental developments in the field of integrable systems and their correlation functions in statistical mechanics and quantum field theory, using quantum groups, algebraic calculus and deformation theory
