Microsoft Lync

Microsoft Lync (from 2003 until 2010 Microsoft Office Communicator ) is a software for communication within companies and for storing the communication data. The focus is on the chat between company employees ( instant messaging). While Lync is the current in the terminal of each participant software (the " Client" ), completed the actual Lync Server network tasks within the company. Lync is now the professional version of the widespread private use Windows Live Messenger. In addition to the chat function, the software also allows Internet Telephony VoIP and conferencing and web conferencing. Also an interface to other corporate networks is also possible to chat services such as AOL Instant Messenger from other manufacturers, Yahoo! Messenger and Google Talk.

Lync Presence collects information about the Establishment's staff, so created attendance records and logs the communication between the employees and videoconferencing.

The server technology allows for the maintenance of computers from a remote computer. For Internet telephony, the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and as a complement for instant messaging and presence information of the SIMPLE standard is employed. Transfers files the system via the protocols RTP and SRTP, online conferences on the Persistent Shared Object Model ( PSOM ). The Lync client uses to connect to the Web Components Server HTTPS to download address books and to expand distribution lists. The default supported combinations include the encrypted communication with SIP over TLS and SRTP and SIP over the unencrypted TCP and RTP. The Lync Server Technology also offers the access to chat services such as AOL Instant Messenger from other manufacturers, Yahoo! Messenger and Google Talk.

The current version is Lync Server 2013.

Client Platforms

As a Windows application, it can be distributed as an MSI package and uses the Active Directory credentials and DNS queries to connect to the Microsoft Lync Server.

Microsoft Lync is available for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. There are also apps for Android, iOS, and Windows Phone. Through the open SIP protocol, it is possible also with other clients, such as Microsoft Communicator on Nokia smartphones (Symbian ^ 3 since Anna update) to connect with Microsoft Lync Server. Furthermore, it is an app for Windows 8 available in the Windows Store.
