Microsoft Office XML formats

WordprocessingML ( WordML often called ) is a technology developed by Microsoft for Microsoft Word Version 2003 XML - based markup language for text -processing documents.

Compared to the binary Microsoft Word file format (doc. ) The creation and processing of Microsoft Word files easier with the introduction of WordprocessingML. Competitive products and customized software applications to create, read and modify without having to access Microsoft Word features WordprocessingML documents. This is made possible by the use of XML.

Currently there are two versions of WordprocessingML, the 2003 version and the version that is part of the ISO / IEC standard 29500:2008 ( Office Open XML).

WordprocessingML 2003

WordprocessingML 2003 documents are stored in one (1) uncompressed XML file. These files consist mainly of four parts:

  • General Document Properties ( DocumentProperties )
  • Styles ( styles)
  • Application-specific document properties ( docPr )
  • Document content (body)

The document content is divided at the lowest level in more runs (r ), where properties ( rPr ) can be assigned.

WordprocessingML 2003 was standardized by any standards body, so it is not a manufacturer-independent standard.

Microsoft grants a perpetual, royalty-free license to use WordprocessingML. In a covenant not to sue Microsoft has stated that it irrevocably waives necessary to enforce all for a compliant implementation of the Office 2003 XML Reference Schemas specification patents over parts of the program that implements this specification. This does not apply to claims of third parties.

Dissemination

WordprocessingML 2003 Microsoft Word Viewer 2003, OpenOffice.org and Apple also supported by Microsoft Word 2003 Professional, TextEdit.

Office Open XML WordprocessingML

Office Open XML WordprocessingML WordprocessingML is a new version of that part of the Office Open XML standards. The standardization was carried out within the framework of the Technical Committee 45 ( TC45 ) of Ecma International as well as within ISO / IEC. This markup language is an evolution of WordprocessingML 2003.
