The Reserve Midmar Nature Reserve is 24 kilometers and 7 kilometers from Pietermaritzburg Howick away in the South African province of KwaZulu -Natal. Managed the reserve from Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife.

The 1,000 -hectare reserve is home Hartebeest, Black Wildebeest, Blesbok, Springbok, reedbuck, Oribi, Zebra and numerous waterfowl. Since larger predators are missing, the area can be explored not only in cars but also on foot. There is also a colony of the endangered South African Crowned Crane.

The pent-up Umgeni River forms a lake in the reserve, which is frequented by weekend sailors, windsurfers and anglers from the surrounding area.

Every February will take place the so-called " Midmar Mile " here. Here, masses overthrow of floats from the shore of Midmar dam into the water in order to meet the largest inland swimming competition in the world. The originally quite local event has evolved since the first race of 1974 with 153 participants over 5,027 participants in 1994 to more than 16,000 participants in 2003.
