Miguel Ortiz Berrocal

Miguel Ortiz Berrocal ( born September 28, 1933 Algaidas, Malaga Province, Andalusia, † 31 May 2006 Antequera, Spain) was a Spanish sculptor. He is best known for his small sculptures as so-called " puzzle sculptures ".

Life and work

Miguel Berrocal was married to Maria Cristina Blais de Saxe - Gotha e Bragança Coburgo, the daughter of Maria Pia de Saxe - Coburgo e Bragança.

He studied mathematics and architecture at the University of Madrid, and later Art in Paris and Rome before settling in Negrar, near Verona. The late fifties Berrocal began his puzzle sculptures made ​​of metal. He created his first sculpture dismantled in 1959. With this particular, rather small sculptures he gained international attention, so he was among others participated in the documenta III in Kassel in 1964. His work shows influences of Eduardo Chillida. His sculptures are part of international collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
