Mike Leavitt

Michael Okerlund Leavitt ( born February 11, 1951 in Cedar City, Utah ) is an American politician ( Republican). He was from 2005 to 2009 the 8th Minister of Health of the United States.

Private

Leavitt holds a bachelor's degree in economics and business from Southern Utah University. He is married to Jacalyn Smith and father of five children. Leavitt is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ( Mormons).

Career

He was from 1992 to the 14th Governor of Utah and was re-elected twice to 2000. On 5 November 2003 he resigned his governorship to be a day later sworn in as the 10th director of the Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA ). Previously, on 11 August of the same year, he was nominated by George W. Bush for President and confirmed by the Senate with 88:8 votes on 28 October 2003. He was also a member of the Homeland Security Advisory Council ( about: Homeland Security Advisory Council ).

President Bush nominated him on 13 December 2004 as the new health minister to Tommy Thompson. He was confirmed on 26 January 2005 by acoustic vote of the Senate. With the end of Bush's term in January 2009 resigned from the Cabinet also Leavitt.
