Mikulov Castle

Mikulov Castle ( German Nikolsburg ) is located in the eponymous town of Mikulov in Okres Břeclav, Czech Republic.

The castle stands on the site of a Slavic settlement, since at the end of the 13th century was a stone castle, which extended the Lords of Liechtenstein later. The present appearance of the object received by a generous reconstruction in the years 1719-1730 by Christian Alexander Oedtl among the princes of Dietrich Stein, who had purchased the castle in the 16th century.

During the German War the castle was the headquarters of the Prussian King Wilhelm I and the Prussian Chancellor Otto von Bismarck and the Prussian General Staff. Here, the preliminary Peace of Mikulov between Prussia and Austria was signed on 26 July 1866.

A large part of the castle was destroyed by fire at the end of the Second World War. Today is located in the premises of a local museum. At present, the museum houses, among other exhibitions related to the viticulture in Moravia, traces of the Romans and Germans in Moravia, as well as an exhibition that illuminates life in the castle at the time of those closer Ditrichstein. In addition, the museum has an important collection of scientific instruments from the period of 16th to 19th century.
