Mikura-jima

Mikura -jima (Japanese御 蔵 岛) is a volcanic island in the Pacific Ocean. It belongs geographically to the archipelago of the Izu Islands, and counts how the entire island group, administratively to the Japanese prefecture of Tokyo.

Geography

Mikura -jima is located about 200 km south of Tokyo and 22 km south of the neighboring island of Miyake- jima, with which they the sub-prefecture Miyake (三 宅 支 庁, Miyake- shicho ) forms. The nearly circular island has a diameter of almost 6 miles and has an area of 20.55 km ². The whole island is of the up to 851 m high stratovolcano formed Oyama (御 山, occasionally called Miyama misread ), whose last eruption, however, dates back about 6,000 years.

The 342 inhabitants (as of February 1, 2014) live in the village Mikurajima (御 蔵 岛村, -mura ), which covers the entire island; the population density is 17 inhabitants. / km ².
