Milan Begović

Milan Begovic ( born January 19, 1876 in Vrlika, † May 13, 1948 in Zagreb) was a Croatian writer and dramatist.

Life

Begovic attended elementary school in Vrlika and high school in Split ( 1888-1894 ). Subsequently, he studied at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Zagreb 1894-1896 and 1897-1903 Vienna, where he graduated in Slavic and Romance languages ​​. Besides already worked as a substitute teacher in Split and Zadar. In 1909 he began the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg as a volunteer and 1910 as a dramaturge. In addition, he worked with at the Theatre Academy. 1912 was Begovic dramaturg and director of the New Viennese stage in Vienna and 1913 in the Srpsko narodno pozorište in Novi Sad. During World War II he lived in Vienna, [note 1] then from 1920 in Zagreb, but where he undertook many journeys through Europe. In 1927 he became director of the theater Drama, 1929, he was transferred to the high school service, and in 1932 he retired. Since 1936 he was a corresponding member of the Academy.

After his death he was buried in the Mirogoj cemetery in Zagreb.

Works

Begovic was active in all literary genres, but his special love was the theater. As a playwright, he was also known in the West and listed on foreign stages. Western influence is also noticeable in his other works ( Ibsen, Pirandello ). Common psychological problems in his work can also be the influence of Sigmund Freud seen. He sometimes used pseudonyms like Tugomir Cetinski, Xeres de la Maraja or Stanko Dusic. Begovic translated several plays of world literature in Serbo-Croatian.
