Milan–Chiasso railway

The railway line Milan - Chiasso is a cross-border, continuous double track and electrified at 3000 volts DC main railway line between Chiasso ( Switzerland ) and Milan. The track is owned by the FS infrastructure daughter RFI.

Importance

The track is next to the axis Novara -Bellinzona ( with the railway lines Novara Luino and Luino Bellinzona ) one of the two Südzufahrten Italy for the Gotthard Railway and the Gotthard tunnel. History

The portion Milan - Monza was opened on 18 August 1840, the second railway line in Italy behind the railway line Naples- Portici by the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia. Originally, the line should be extended to Bergamo, but as it turned out, that a separate license would be required for a branch line to Chiasso, the project was abandoned in favor of the extension to Chiasso. On October 10, 1849, the sequel was opened to Camnago - Lentate and on 6 December the same year reached the railroad tracks, the station of Albate - Camerlata. The completion to Como was 1875. Coinciding with the Gotthard tunnel and the opening of the Ticino Valley Railway to Chiasso in 1882 was also closing the gap with the tunnel Monte Olimpino (today Tunnel Monte Olimpino 1) completed.

1898 a trial operation between Milan and Monza with the battery railcar RM 5101 and 5102 used. This is the first electric railway operation in Italy. However, it was set in 1904.

On June 18, 1990, the tunnel Monte Olimpino went 2 in operation. This tunnel extends to a length of 7209 meters and is situated between the border and the breakpoint Cucciago. It was built as a freight bypass Como and also serves as such. Every year over 18,000 freight trains pass through the tunnel.
