Miles City is a city in the U.S. state of Montana and the county seat ( county seat ) of Custer County.

History

Today's Miles City has developed significantly in the second half of the 19th century, when the military base of Tongue River Cantonment, the alcohol was prohibited. As a result, the soldiers stationed there moved to the settlement, there to consume alcohol, which favored the development of local gastronomy. The place was at that time by the commander of the Base Nelson Appleton Miles initially called only Miles and Miles Town and determined in 1877 the administrative seat of Custer County.

With the addition of further land for settlement was next to the then so-called Old Miles another, as New Miles designated place, which was officially registered in 1878 as a community. Later, the communities were summarized as Miles City to a single city. Around 1880, the city had 23 restaurants, but no church at 550 residents. It soon moved to other services such as retailers, upholstery shops and laundries and sheep and cattle breeders in the surrounding areas were down.

Currently, agriculture is the dominant industry in Miles City.

Traffic

By Set right on the Yellowstone River City Miles runs the Interstate 94 and forms part of the main road. In the southeast the city has a direct connection to the U.S. Highway 12

The city is the owner of Frank Wiley Field Airport ( ICAO code KMLS ), which is about four kilometers northwest of the city center.
