In 1850, the brothers Charles and Lawrence Best left the family of her father Best and Company, to build their own businesses. In Milwaukee, the time was particularly influenced by German emigration flows, they founded the Plank Road Brewery ( also known as Old Watertown Plank Road Brewery ). Five years later, the German emigrant Frederick Miller bought them from the brewery for $ 2300 and renamed it to Milwaukee Brewery.

The proximity to the surrounding farms in the Menomonee Valley facilitated the procurement of raw materials. In addition, Miller was able to use the built of the best brothers cave system for storage and fermentation of the beer. In the following years he built the system on and let it dress up with bricks.

Because of the great distance to the nearest major city Milwaukee Miller was next to the brewery a home for unmarried workers build. In addition to their wages, these workers also received room and board.

Turn of the century to 1950s

In the 1880s, Miller led a number of technological innovations: 1883 Miller began bottling. Three years later, Miller was one of the first breweries in the world, the pasteurized their beer. 1887 led to a mechanical refrigeration system, so that beer could also ferment days. Previously, you had to store the beer in the traditional manner in caves and cool with ice blocks. Thus, one could now produce all year round. Frederick Miller died in 1888, whereupon his sons Ernest, Emil and Frederick with her brother Carl took over the management of the company together. At that time, Miller was already among the ten largest American breweries with a total output of about 300,000 barrels per year. They left the brewery under the name of Frederick Miller Brewing Company Register.

Competition against Anheuser -Busch

Three years later, Miller was sold for $ 130 million to Philip Morris. At this time, the strategic goal was set to overtake the competitors Anheuser -Busch as a leader. In order to achieve this was set as before on marketing and product line expansion a much greater attention. Under the leadership of the heads of marketing John Murphy several campaigns have been launched, the Miller beer touted as " blue-collar " layer. Among other things, with the slogan " If you've got the time, we've got the beer" (basically, "If you have the time, we 've got the beer " ), revenues could be increased.

After other brewers brought their own versions of a light beer on the market, Miller tried unsuccessfully rights to the name " Lite " sue. Another time again tried Anheuser -Busch, the Miller Brewery on " misleading packaging description " ( " deceptive packaging" ) to sue. Miller had briefly introduced a product in the style of Löwenbräu beer before, then Anheuser- Busch's Michelob brand 10% market share lost. In a similar procedure Miller complained that Anheuser- Busch's brand " Natural Light " by no means "natural" is.

Despite the great success of the brands Miller Lite and Miller Genuine Draft was not able to catch up Anheuser -Busch. In 1988, President and CEO William Howell resigned. He was succeeded by Leonard J. Goldstein. In the early 1990s, stagnated in the American beer market. The three largest breweries, Anheuser -Busch, Miller and Coors, had to lay off workers.
