Million Programme

The million program (Swedish Miljonprogrammet ) was a building program of the Swedish government. It got its name from the fact that it had the goal within ten years to build around one million new homes ( 1965-1975 ).

Background

In the 1950s and 1960s Sweden experienced an unprecedented economic boom, which led to the establishment of the welfare state. This economic boom led to a strong population growth and increased on the other hand the population's demand for greater and better living space, as the existing standard in Sweden was relatively low. To remedy the lack of housing, the government decided therefore to build one million new homes at a former population of less than 8 million. The new homes were often built in mass production in the newly built satellite towns in concrete. First, the apartments were well accepted by the population due to the increased living standards and modern interior architecture; but soon, critical voices have been raised that pointed to the negative social consequences of this construction. In the wake of the oil crisis in 1973 and the ensuing economic downturn, the million program then ran out slowly.

Follow

The apartments of the million program had due to the mass production often of poor quality. This and the social isolation meant that the apartments were unattractive gradually. With the leaving home of the Swedish population settled in the residential centers refugees and immigrants on. With time, these areas were partially immigrant ghettos, which are characterized by high unemployment, high crime and weak results in the formation. An extreme example is the district of Rosengård in Malmö, but also in Stockholm and in other large cities, there are a number of such district. Now that the people of Swedish descent were not among them, and was the integration is this much more difficult. Nonetheless, multiply lately the voices that call for a preservation of these monuments as residential areas.
