Milomir Kovac

Milomir Kovač ( born October 21, 1962 in Foca, Yugoslavia ) is a German veterinary specialist and surgeon of Serbian origin. He deals with equine diseases and is the author of textbooks. Since 2007 he is head of the veterinary clinic "New Century" in Moscow. In October 2013 Milomir Kovač was presented at the Moscow State Academy of Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnology of the title of professor " honoris causa " for outstanding achievements in the field of equine medicine in the Russian Federation.

Life and career

Kovač was born on October 21, 1962 in Foca (Yugoslavia). In 1980 he graduated from the medical high school. He graduated from the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Sarajevo where he graduated as top of his class in 1987, and was awarded the Gold Medal of the University of Sarajevo. After graduating from college, he worked from 1987 to 1992 as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Pathophysiology at the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Sarajevo. In 1990 he completed the advanced training in the field of " Radiation Biology " at the University of Sarajevo with honors. He defended his scientific work and received for it the title of " Master of Veterinary Medicine " (MSc). At the University of Belgrade, he wrote and defended his dissertation in 1993 and was awarded the title of " Doctor of Science " (PhD). In 1994, he worked as a research assistant at the Institute of Immunology at the Medical Faculty of the University of Greifswald ( Germany ). From 1995 to 2007 he worked as a researcher and veterinarian with the " Animal Hospital high moor " and the " Bergische Animal Clinic - Holy House " in two leading equine clinics in Germany. In 1998 he received at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover the title " veterinary specialist for horses". After passing the state examination at the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Giessen in 2004, he received the license certificate as a veterinarian.

Since 2007, Kovač works in the veterinary clinic "New Century" in Moscow working as the only full-time horses surgeon in the Russian Federation. He began first the implementation of colic surgery in horses. In the course of six years, 200 such operations are performed with a survival rate of about 82%. In addition, he began first in the Russian Federation to perform laparoscopic surgery for cryptorchidism and cryosurgery for removal of stomach and skin tumors in horses. He also spent first in the Russian Federation to the PRP method and the culture of mesenchymal stem cells in treatment of tendon and ligament injury in horses. Under his leadership, he turned with Joseph Toth first in the Russian Federation a pars plana vitrectomy in horses with equine recurrent uveitis.

Kovac wrote five books on equine diseases and is the author of 70 scientific publications in the field of equine medicine. His books " colic disorders " and " orthopedic diseases of horses - Modern methods of diagnosis and treatment " are the first published textbooks in the field of equine medicine in the Russian-speaking countries. As textbooks for students in universities these books have been approved by the Ministry of Education in the Russian Federation. Since 2007 he is active as a journalist and writes for the Russian magazine " horse world ".
