Miloslav Mečíř

Miloslav Mečíř ( born May 19, 1964 in Bojnice ) is a former Slovak tennis player. His greatest achievement was winning the Olympic gold for Czechoslovakia.

Life

Mečíř, due to its soulful playing style and extremely smooth movement nicknamed " Cat" had won his first title on the ATP World Tour 1985 in Rotterdam in the final against Jakob Hlasek. Overall, he has won eleven single titles and nine doubles titles during his career. Its highest listing in the tennis world ranking he reached in 1988 with four position in both the single and double.

Twice in his career he was able to reach a Grand Slam final. He was defeated in each case at the U.S. Open in 1986 and the Australian Open in 1989 his final opponent Ivan Lendl. In the doubles competition, he reached the second round each at the Australian Open, the French Open and the U.S. Open.

The highlight of his career was winning the gold medal by the final victory against Tim Mayotte at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, when he started for the former Czechoslovakia. He also won at the side of Milan Šrejber the bronze medal in doubles.

Mečíř played 1983-1990 26 singles and six doubles matches for the Czechoslovak Davis Cup team. Twice Czechoslovakia stood in the semifinals. In 1985, he lost both his singles matches against Boris Becker and Michael Westphal in the 0-5 defeat to Germany in the 1-4 defeat against Sweden, he won at the side of Tomáš Šmíd the double, but gave both his singles match against Kent Carlsson and Stefan Edberg from. In 1987, he won with the Czechoslovak team to World Team Cup and the 1989 Hopman Cup.

In 1990 he resigned because of persistent back pain at the age of only 26 years of professional sports. Mečíř is married, his son Miloslav Mečíř junior was also a professional tennis player.

Mečíř is captain of the Slovakian Davis Cup team.
