Milwaukie is a city in Clackamas County, Oregon in the USA. A small portion of the city lies in Multnomah County. 2009, the population was 20,841. Milwaukie is a suburb of Portland ( Oregon).

History

The city, which is named after Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was founded in 1847 by Lot Whitcomb on the banks of the Willamette River. In the decades after the founding of the inhabitants of forestry, shipbuilding and agriculture lived. Originally conceived as the transfer of goods and trade center for maritime traffic on the Willamette River, Milwaukie, however, never reached the importance of neighboring Portland. Because of the decline in population to about 100 in 1901 and the poor general condition of urban infrastructure, the city was officially incorporated in 1903. After the creation of the City Council in 1903 was followed by the construction of water and electricity and the opening of a railroad to Portland. As of 1950, the population Milwaukies quadrupled since many working in Portland persons settled in the suburbs.
