Min Leibrook

Life and work

Leibrook began his musical career as a cornet player before he switched to tuba and double bass. In the 1920s he played in the band Ten Foot in Chicago. In 1924 he was a member of The Wolverines with Bix Beiderbecke, wherein first recordings were made. After that he played with Arnold Johnson. In 1927 he moved to New York City, where he worked until 1931 in the Paul Whiteman Orchestra. During this time he began to play the bass saxophone, mostly in smaller ensembles with Frankie Trumbauer and Bix Beiderbecke. In the 1930s he played with Lennie Hayton and Eddy Duchin, usually as a double bassist. In 1936, he again worked as a bass saxophone player in the band The Three T's with Frankie Trumbauer, Jack Teagarden, and Charlie Teagarden. End of the decade he moved to Los Angeles and worked as a bass player for radio stations and theaters. Leibrook who participated 1924-1937 in 77 recording sessions, died 1943 at the age of forty years from the effects of a brain tumor.
