Minimum Description Length

Minimum Description Length or MDL is an information-theoretic method, which was introduced in 1978 by Jorma Rissanen for describing regularities in the measured data. The more the data may be compressed, the greater is the proportion of the order in the signal. The MDL is used for inductive inference.

In the field of communications technology, the MDL criterion is used to estimate the number of signals present.
