Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (Japan)

The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (Japanese邮政 省, Yusei shō, dt " Ministry of the postal system ," officially engl. Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, MPT) was until 2001 a Ministry of the Japanese central government. It was responsible for overseeing the telecommunications sector for the mail, insurance and financial services of the Post Office, from 1952 for the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) and after its privatization in 1985.

The Ministry was the successor to the Teishin - shō (逓 信 省, " Ministry of Communications " ) created in 1949, which had been responsible for the post office, the telegraph system and the lighthouses since 1885 ( sometimes also for railways). From 1943 to 1945 it was part of the Ministry of Transport and Communications (运输 通信 省, Un'yu - Tsushin - shō ). From 1945 to 1952 there was next to the Post Ministry of the stand-alone Ministry of Telecommunications (电 気 通信 省, Denkitsūshin - shō ).

In restructuring the central government on 6 January 2001, the Ministry of Postal Services was part of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the Somu - shō.
