Mipham Chokyi Lodro

Mipham Chokyi Lodro (Tib. chos kyi blo gros mi pham ); (* 1952 in Derge, Tibet) is the 14th Shamar and also known as Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche. He is the zweitbedeutenste Lama of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism after the Karmapa. While the Karmapa be dubbed the Black Hat Lamas for their Black Crown, Shamarpas as red hat lamas are known.

The second Karmapa, Karma Pakshi's predicted that " future Karmapa will take in two forms nirmanakaya form." The Karmapa explained that it symbolized their identical nature. Thus the line of Shamarpas was born.

The current Shamar was recognized by the 16th Karmapa Rangjung Dorje Rigpe. He is a major player in the Karmapa conflict within the Karma Kagyu school. He has his hand Thaye Dorje recognized as the current and legitimate 17th Karmapa. Other high-ranking lamas of the line do not recognize Thrinle Ugyen Dorje as the current Karmapa, as well as the 14th Dalai Lama and Chinese authorities.
