I wave bleiwe wat makes me or I wölle bleiwe wat mir sin ( German: We want to remain what we are, French: Nous nous sommes ce que rester Voulons ) is the national motto of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. It refers to the Luxembourg desire to remain independent, although it is surrounded by the stronger and bigger nations Belgium, France and Germany.

Origin

The phrase goes back to the patriotic Luxembourg song De Feierwon, ( German: The chariot of fire = steam locomotive ) of 1859 was actually first written by the Luxembourg State officials, writer and poet Michel Lentz as a tribute to the first international ( cross-border ) rail transport in Luxembourg.. The Patriotic Song » De Feierwon " was on October 4, 1859 in this regard at the opening ceremony and opening of the Luxembourg railway station and the rail link to Arlon in Belgium via Luxembourg to Thionville in France, first premiered. The final line of the song "We want to remain what we are " later gained the national self-discovery of Luxembourg as a motto of greater importance.
