Miramar, San Diego

Miramar is a high -mounted suburb, about 30 km north of the city of San Diego, California, (USA), while the former location of the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School ( "Top Gun" ) made famous by the eponymous film starring Tom Cruise.

Miramar has over 24,000 acres (97 km ²) one of the largest military airfields in the world ( capacity of approximately 200,000 flights per year).

In 1997, the Naval Air Station Miramar in the U.S. Navy was taken over by the U.S. Marine Corps and renamed in Miramar Marine Corps Air Station ( MCAS Miramar ). The land on which the MCAS is located, has often been taken by the city of San Diego as a possible new location for the San Diego National Airport in the eye. However outweighed the military - strategic considerations, as Miramar plays an important role for national defense in the southwestern part of the U.S..

At the climax of the Top Gun training program, the base was nicknamed " Fightertown USA". This name also appears in other films and series, such as JAG - The Call of Duty or the movie A Few Good Men.
